오늘날 경쟁이 심해질수록 사람들은 오히려 마음의 평온을 갈구하고 자신만의 신념을 찾으려 한다. 한편 우리는 이미 컴퓨터로 대표되는 정보사회를 지나 또 다른 형태의 사회 즉, 롤프 옌센이 얘기했던 ‘드림소사이어티’에 살고 있으며, 이는 이야기가 부활하고 감성에 바탕을 둔 꿈이 통하는 사회이다. 이러한 이야기의 힘을 주목하며, 갤러리JJ는 ‘도자’ 조형작업으로 서사적 환영을 정교하게 재현해내는 이윤희 작가의 전시를 마련하였다. 이윤희는 이야기꾼이라는 수식어가 말해주듯이, 고대와 중세의 서사시와 동서양의 신화, 문양 등에서 추출한 수많은 이미지를 조합하며 스토리를 불어넣는데, 주로 불안과 욕망을 치유하고 안식처로 향하는 소녀의 여정이라는 가상의 시나리오를 주제로 작업을 한다. 이렇게 문학적 변주를 통한 아름답고 정교한 이미지는 우리의 직관과 상상력, 기억 등의 내적감각을 건드리며, 작가는 이미 프랑스, 영국, 독일 등 세계를 무대로 빠르게 두각을 드러내고 있다. 이번 전시는 서울시립미술관의 <신진미술인 전시지원 프로그램>의 선정 전시로 시행된다.
부조로 된 희고 섬세한 미장센의 화면에는 소녀, 해골, 꽃, 말, 중세 기사 등 다양한 도상들로 가득 차 있다. 파편화된 신체조각이나 해골에서 중세에 성행했던 죽음의 무도를 떠올리고 한편 히에로니무스 보스의 다채로운 세부 묘사가 연금술과 상상력을 동원하여 원래 뜻과 상관없이 심미적으로 바라보게 하는 점과 일맥상통해 보이기도 한다. 입체임에도 마치 회화적 느낌을 주는데, 작가의 의도대로 욕망과 불안, 치유의 서사를 재현한 이야기 그림책이자 그 서사가 재연되는 원형극장에 다름 아니다. 흙을 재료로 하는 작업은 원형과 몰드 제작, 슬립캐스팅, 여러 번에 걸친 가마작업과 드로잉을 거치는 등 세심하고도 지난한 과정이 요구되는데, 작가 특유의 섬세한 스토리텔링 작업은 까다로운 세라믹 조형작업에 있어서 표현의 한계를 확장시키고 있다.
라깡에 의하면 ‘욕망의 주체로의 이행을 가능케 하는 원동력이 바로 불안’이다. 불안은 누구도 피해갈 수 없는 근원적 정서로서, 작가가 이야기에 대입시킨 소녀는 불안과 욕망을 동시에 안고 살아가는 파편화된 개인을 상징한다. 바니타스적 메타포가 진하게 엿보이는 이미지들에서는 선과 악, 아름다움과 추함 등이 함께 공존하며 궁극적으로는 세계의 양면성, 존재의 양면성이 드러난다.
이번 전시는 특히 단테의 ‘신곡’을 모티브로 재구성된 몽환적이고도 신비로운 이야기를 탄탄한 흐름으로 풀어나갈 것으로 기대되며, 신작을 중심으로 부조 및 규모가 큰 입체 작품을 총망라하여 선보인다.전시의 제목 ‘베아트리체의 인사’는 라파엘전파 화가인 로세티(Rossetti)의 작품에서 가져왔다. 두 부분으로 이루어진 로세티 작품에서의 현생에서의 만남과 천상에서의 만남은 관념적으로는 불안, 욕망의 시작과 이상의 실현을 뜻하기도 한다. 신곡이란 ‘꼬메디아(Comedia)’ 즉 ‘희극’이라는 원래의 제목이 시사하는 바 ‘절망에서 시작되어 희망으로 끝나는 이야기’다. 베아트리체는 한 개인이자 이를 넘어서는 이상이다. 우연히 만난 베아트리체의 짧은 한번의 인사가 준 감동은 단테에게 평생 채워지지 않는 욕망을 남겼고 위대한 문학을 낳게 되는 모티브가 되었다. 이윤희의 작품은 결코 노스탤지어적 감상이나 멜랑콜리를 지향하지 않는다. 전시를 통해 작가가 열어 보이는 치유의 여정에 동참하며 스스로의 경험과 세계를 확대하길 바란다.

As the competition aggravates today people long for peace in mind and try finding their own beliefs. We have already been shifted from the era of information to imagination; that is the ‘dream society’ adverted by Rolf Jensen where narratives resurrect and sentiments become its foundation. With this in mind, GalleryJJ has prepared a solo exhibition of Yun Hee Lee who recreates epic fantasies through her porcelain work. Known as a marvelous storyteller, she constructs narratives with a plenty amount of images extracted from the ancient and medieval epics and myths in both Eastern and Western cultures. She works with scenarios often about the journey of a girl towards a sanctuary who is liberated from anxiety and desire. The beautiful and sophisticated images generated through literary variations touch our intuition, imagination, memory and inner senses. The artist has rapidly emerged internationally including France, England and Germany. This exhibition runs as one of the selected expositions by Seoul Museum of Art under <Emerging Artists·Curators Support Program>.
Skulls, girls, flowers, horses, knights and many other icons fill the meticulous white mise-en-scene of her reliefs. From the fragmented body pieces and skulls, we can recall Danse Macabre that was prevalent in the Middle Ages. The colorful details by Hieronymus Bosch evoke the sense of alchemy and imagination, which makes us to look at his work in its own aesthetics regardless of the original meaning. This is true to her work as well. The reliefs have a painterly feeling in which the epics of anxiety and desire, and its healing process are reenacted on this virtual amphitheater as intended by the artist. Working with clay requires attentive courses of action from drawings, making original forms, molds and casting slips, then multiple kiln passes. Her unique storytelling through such an arduous task as the ceramics confirms that she is expanding the limit of expression in its medium.
According to Lacan, the momentum that enables a fulfillment to the subject of desire is anxiety. Anxiety is a fundamental emotion that no one can evade. The girl in the narrative symbolizes a fragmented individual living with anxiety and desire at the same time. In the images where vanitas metaphor is deeply evident, both good and evil, and beauty and ugliness coexist, and ultimately they reveal the duality of the world and of its existence.
『La Divina Comedia』by Dante as a motif, this exhibition reveals a mysterious and dreamlike story within her new work. The title ‘Salutation of Beatrice’ comes from a painting by Dante Rossetti, one of the founding members of Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This two-part painting shows an encounter in purgatory and in paradise in which it signifies the beginning of anxiety and desire, and the realization of the ideal. Dante’s epic is a comedy as the word “Comedia” implies itself in which the story begins with despair but ends with hope. Beatrice is an individual and more, the idea. In a chance encounter, a short salutation of Beatrice has left Dante with an insatiable desire, which then has become the motif for great literature. However, her work does not aim for nostalgia or melancholy. By participating in this restorative journey that the artist provides through this exhibition, we hope you can expand upon your own world and experiences.
