손정희 작가는 흙을 소재로 하는 도자 조각 설치를 통해 인간이 가진 자연의 본성을 탐구한다. 작가가 주로 빚어내는 이종적이고 기형적인 다양한 인간 생명체의 모습들은 우리가 고정적으로 가지고 있는 ‘인간’이라는 일반적 개념의 바깥에 존재한다. 즉 손정희는 개념화되기 이전의 인간, 문명적인 의미화 사슬에 걸리지 않은 억압된 것들과 추방된 것들, 규칙으로부터 탈주된 존재들에 주목한다. 이를 위해 지금까지 주로 신화 속의 신들과 동화 속 인물들을 호출하여 새롭게 해석했다. 해학적으로 풀이된 이들은 젠더 문제에 직면한 현실에 나름대로 순응하며 소소한 기쁨으로 살아가고 있는 각양각색의 여성상들에 다름 아니다. 이들은 공간에 다각적으로 배치되는데, 이러한 연극적 설치는 시각적 극대화 효과를 가져오며 관객들을 모호하고 기괴한 심리적 공간으로 이끈다.

Through ceramic sculptures using soil, Sohn explores the essence of nature that we embody as humans. The heterogeneous and deformed human shapes that she creates do not align with what is generally envisioned as the human form in our fixed notion. In other words, she pays attention to the human before its formal inception, the oppressed and expelled ones that have not been granted meaning in civilized history. For that reason, she has mainly referenced mythical gods and fairytale characters. On the other hand, as a theatrical installation, it brings an intense visual effect and creates an ambiguous and bizarre psychological space for the viewers.
