뉴욕에서 활동하는 다니엘 아샴(Daniel Arsham)은 조각, 건축, 드로잉과 필름 등 다양한 매체를 활용하여 작업하는 작가이다. 먼 미래에서 현재의 물건들을 발굴한 것처럼 보이도록 동시대 문화 아이콘이 부패하거나 부식되고 풍화된 모습을 재현한다. 10대 시절 미국 루이지애나와 플로리다 전역을 강타한 허리케인으로 인해 파괴된 도시를 본 경험이 작업의 원천이 되었다. 아샴은 대상의 현재 모습이 먼 미래에는 어떻게 보여질지 상상하고, 시간이 지남에 따라 파괴되거나 침식된 듯한 모습을 만들어낸다. 현대 사회에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 생산품을 가지고 하는데, 지금 이 시간에도 온전한 모습으로 생산되고 있는 대상들의 부식된 모습은 시간의 존재와 유동성을 상기시키기 때문이다. 포켓몬 피카츄부터 크리스찬 디올, 포르쉐, 아이다스 등 다양한 브랜드와의 콜라보레이션 작업을 선보이며 활발한 활동을 이어가고 있다.

 

Daniel Arsham makes installations and objects that conjure a kind of mythical contemporary archeology. In a practice that spans film, painting, sculpture, and installation—and employs elements of architecture and performance—the artist distorts recognizable forms (a cereal box or classical sculpture, for example) into corroded, calcified, or otherwise glitched-out artifacts. Sometimes he manipulates gallery spaces themselves to achieve his desired effect. Arsham studied at Cooper Union in New York and has exhibited in New York, Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai, Los Angeles, London, and beyond. His work belongs in the collections of the Musée Guimet, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, among others. In addition to his fine art practice, Arsham has collaborated with a number of brands, including Adidas, Dior, and Porsche, and he has worked with the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team as creative director. In 2008, Arsham co-founded the art and architecture collaborative Snarkitecture alongside Alex Mustonen.
