김현식 | KIM Hyunsik (b. 1965, South Korea)

Resin is applied on a rectangular panel and spread evenly over the entire surface to dry. Once the surface is sufficiently dry, a blade is used to mark the dried resin with equally spaced, parallel lines. The process creates fine crests and troughs on the resinous surface. Kim applies paint on the surface so that the grooved surfaces fill with color. Once the grooves have been filled, the surface is wiped carefully with a cloth to remove any trace of paint on the bumps. Then he continues this arduous task over and over again. In that passel of iterations, the orphic lines of colors are hidden and revealed, then hidden again. The mysterious abyss exists in what appears to be an abstract painting.

Kim Hyunsik was born in 1965, South Korea and received BFA in painting from Hongik University in Seoul. Kim held numerous solo exhibitions internationally in Seoul, Beijing, London, Brussels and participated in group exhibitions at Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul(2014), Busan Biennale, Busan(2012), Galerie Orem, Paris(2010), Galerie von Braunbehrens, Munchen, Germany(2009). Kim was awarded the “Korea Tomorrow” prize in 2014.
