ABOUT
김영헌의 추상회화는 동시대 과학문명의 패러다임 전환 속에서 흔들리는 우리의 감각과 세계 인식을 매개로 새로운 회화의 지평을 열어 보인다. 작업은 작가 자신이 감각하고 인식한, 전자로 만들어진 디지털 이미지나 가상 세계의 풍경이 될 수도 있고, 혹은 우리의 일상을 감싸는 빛과 음악 소리의 시각화, 나아가 우주 만물을 구성하는 에너지와 과학적 실재계 같은 비가시적 세계를 감각의 영역으로 끌어내는 작업으로 설명될 수 있다. 전자electronic는 세계를 구성하는 기본 요소로, 이들의 파동 패턴은 작가와 세계를 연결하는 매개체이다. 곧 그의 작업은 파동으로 가득한 우주의 역동적인 에너지에 다름 아니다.
잔물결처럼 일렁이는 파동과 생성의 이미지, 그리고 일련의 불연속성은 그의 작업의 특성이다. 화면은 부드러운 웨이브의 줄무늬 패턴의 왜곡과 절단, 보색의 대비 등 서로 이질적인 회화 요소가 다채롭게 어울리면서 환타지적 감각과 자유로운 힘의 생동감이 교차한다. 화면 속 추상의 필치가 빚어내는 과감하게 분할 절단된 구성으로 인한 불연속적인 리듬감은 마치 현대인이 디지털 기기를 사용할 때 겪는 파편화된 감각의 경험일 수 있다. 한편 화면에서 자주 나타나는 초록과 핑크, 노랑과 파랑 등의 보색 관계는 디지털이 가진 속성으로, 선명하고 인공적인 색채는 스스로 빛을 내는 RGB 가시광선과 유사하여 현실감에서 멀어진 사이버틱한 분위기 혹은 가상공간의 느낌마저 준다. 작품에서 이러한 대비되는 요소들의 충돌과 간섭 현상은 마치 진동하고 공명하는 파동처럼 또 다른 줄무늬의 생성을 유도하면서 회화 평면을 운동하는 생명력으로 이끈다.
화면은 현실과 가상이 중첩되는 세상, 디지털적 신호인 0과 1 사이에 모호하게 보이지 않는 미지의 세계의 무한함과 파동, 간섭과 왜곡, 생성으로 점철되며 작가는 이에 관한 감각을 회화적 언어로 치환한다. 이는 곧 견고한 것이 아닌, 입자이면서 파동으로 이루어진 우주와 세계의 본질에 대한 사유를 가능하게 한다. 2009년부터 시작된 <일렉트로닉 노스탤지어> 연작으로 대표되는 그의 회화 작업은 이처럼 달라진 디지털의 환영 속 파편화된 감각을 지극히 아날로그적 매체인 회화 평면 위로 끌어와 새로운 감각으로 창출한다.
김영헌은 현재 서울을 중심으로 뉴욕, 프랑스, 홍콩을 무대로 회화작업을 이어가고 있는 작가이다. 1995년 중앙미술대전에서 대상을 받으며 미술계의 주목을 이끌었으며, 이후 프랑스의 '파리 시테'(2000-2002년), 독일 뒤셀도르프 회헤르베그스튜디오(2003년) 입주작가를 거치며 2009년 귀국하기 전까지 유럽에서 활동하였다. 성곡미술관, 자하미술관, 스페이스K 대구 등에서 개인전을 가졌으며 2020년 하인두미술상을 받았다. 리움미술관을 비롯하여 국내외 주요 기관에 작품이 소장되어 있다.
Kim Young-Hun is a Seoul-based painter active internationally in New York, France, and Hong Kong. He received his BFA in Painting from Hongik University and MA in Painting from Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London. After winning the Grand Prize at the JoongAng Fine Arts Prize in 1995, he worked in Europe until 2009, including residencies at Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (2000–02), and Höherweg Studios, Düsseldorf (2003). He has held solo exhibitions at Sungkok Art Museum, Jaha Museum of Art, Space K Daegu, Soluna Fine Art Hong Kong, Galerie Richard (Paris/New York), Hakgojae, and elsewhere, and received the Ha In-Doo Art Award in 2020. His work is held in major public and private collections, including Leeum Museum of Art, Jaha Museum of Art, Sungkok Art Museum, MMCA Art Bank, Government Art Bank, Kolon Group, and Bank of America.
Through the vibration and rhythm of waves, Kim creates a contemporary language of abstraction. Painting brings the invisible into the realm of sensation: light and sound that permeate everyday life, as well as the energies that constitute the universe. Juxtaposed complementary colors distort form and structure, while noise, collision, and interference generate new patterns like waves in vibration and resonance. Charged with the dynamic energy of a universe in motion, his paintings draw us toward the origins of life and the world.
