생경한 그리움
갤러리JJ는 김영헌Kim Young-Hun 작가의 전시를 개최한다. 독특한 잔물결 패턴과 색채로 잘 알려진 그의 회화 작업은 동시대 과학문명의 패러다임 전환 속에서 흔들리는 우리의 감각과 세계 인식을 매개로 새로운 회화의 지평을 열어 보인다. 그것은 비가시적인 전자 파동wave이 진동하는 에너지 세계의 현전인 동시에 메타적 시공간의 기억과 그리움을 향한 시적 은유로 나타난다. 신작을 중심으로 하는 이번 전시 《김영헌: 프록시마》는 더욱 확장된 회화 언어를 보여주는 <프리퀀시Frequency>시리즈와 2009년부터 시작된 대표적인 시리즈 <일렉트로닉 노스탤지어Electronic Nostalgia>의 20여 점으로 구성된다.
물감의 층위, 얼룩과 스크래치, 진동하는 선과 면의 생성과 사라짐은 화면에서 연속과 불연속을 오가며 공명하는 아름다운 변주를 만들어낸다. 리듬을 타고 화면을 가로지르는 획들은 역동성의 한편에 신체의 떨림과 움직임을 섬세하게 전하고, 오래된 듯 벗겨진 색면의 틈새로 드러나는 다른 색의 층위와 함께 시간의 흔적을 담아 노스탤지어적 감성을 불러일으킨다. 상반된 요소들이 만들어내는 대립과 조화는 작업 특징 가운데 하나로, 디지털의 화려한 인공적 색감, 선들의 질서와 노이즈가 빚어내는 혼돈이 교차하는 회화 세계는 오히려 조화롭게 아름다우며 시선을 끈다. 그것은 때로 가상 풍경Virtual-scape 혹은 음악적 추상처럼 보인다.
가상공간에서의 기억과 함께 시작된 ‘일렉트로닉 노스탤지어’ 시리즈는 전자 노이즈로 인한 형상의 파편과 해체, 유토피아적 풍경에 이어 기하적인 픽셀과 파동의 세계로 더욱 추상화되며 지금까지 이어져 오고 있다. ‘노이즈’ 요소보다 회화의 물질 언어에 더 집중한 ‘프리퀀시’ 시리즈는 흐름의 일관된 방향성과 질서를 부여하고, 묵직한 물감의 두께 즉 물질의 강도로 리듬을 만들어낸다. 이번 전시에서 특히 한 획(一劃)의 프리퀀시 작업 <p26015-Frequency>(2026)을 새롭게 선보이며 우주의 파동 에너지가 곧 동양에서의 기의 움직임, 기운생동의 미학으로 드러난다. 전시는 김영헌 작업의 중심에 있는 두 시리즈의 흐름과 현재의 변화를 살피면서 작업세계의 독자성을 조명하고, 이러한 전자적 미시세계를 우주로 확장시켜 본다. 하나로 결국 연결되는 미시세계와 거대한 세계는 우리의 인식 바깥에 있으며, 경험한 적 없는 시공간으로 우리를 데려간다. 전시 제목인 ‘프록시마’는 우리가 사는 태양계에서 가장 가까운 별의 이름이다. 그것은 지구의 가장 가까운 이웃별이지만 실제로는 결코 갈 수도 닿을 수 없는 아득히 먼 곳으로, 별은 우리에게 무한한 상상력과 함께 광활한 우주 공간을 떠올리게 한다. 별빛은 이미 지나간 시간으로부터 우리에게 오고, 우리는 오래된 과거의 별을 보고 있다. 별 헤는 밤의 그리움과 파동으로 가득한 과학적 우주가 교차한다...
An Unfamiliar Longing, Anemoia
Gallery JJ is pleased to present Kim Young-Hun: Proxima, a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Kim Young-Hun. Known for his signature ripple patterns and chromatic fields, Kim expands the language of painting through perceptual landscape reshaped by paradigm shifts in contemporary science and technology His paintings render visible an otherwise imperceptible field of vibrating electronic waves, transforming this energetic reality into a poetic metaphor for memory and longing across space and time. The exhibition brings together some twenty paintings from recent Frequency series that further extends his pictorial language, alongside Electronic Nostalgia, his seminal series, begun in 2009.
Layers of pigment, stains, scratches, and vibrating lines and planes emerge and recede, moving between continuity and discontinuity to create resonant visual variations. Rhythmic strokes sweep across the canvas, carrying the subtle tremor and movement of the body, while weathered surfaces reveal buried layers of color that hold the passage of time and awaken nostalgia. The tension and harmony between opposing forces define Kim’s practice: luminous digital color, ordered lines, and the irregularity of noise converge into a pictorial world of remarkable coherence. At times, the work unfolds as virtual space; at others, as a form of musical abstraction.
Rooted in memories of virtual space, Electronic Nostalgia has evolved from fragmented dissolving forms shaped by electronic noise, through utopian landscapes, into an increasingly abstract realm of geometric pixels and waves. By contrast, Frequency turns from noise toward the material language of painting, establishing a consistent direction and order while generating rhythm through the weight and physicality of paint. This exhibition premieres p26015–Frequency (2026), a new work composed of a single brushstroke in which the wave energy of the cosmos finds expression as qi, embodying the East Asian ideal of qiyun shengdong (spirit resonance). Together these two defining series reveal the evolution of Kim's practice, extending an electronic microcosm toward the scale of the universe. Ultimately, the microscopic and the vast are inseparably connected beyond the limits of perception, drawing us toward an uncharted space-time. The exhibition takes its title from Proxima, the nearest star beyond our solar system. Though our nearest stellar neighbor, it remains unimaginably distant and forever beyond reach, evoking the boundless universe and imagination. Starlight reaches us from the distant past; the stars we see belong to another time. Here, starlit longing converges with the rhythmic pulse of the scientific cosmos...
