권기수 | KWON Kisoo (b. 1972, South Korea)
권기수(b.1972)는 성별이나 나이로 규정지어지지 않는 사람을 의미하는 기호인 '동구리'를 창조, 동양의 전통적인 사상과 기법을 현대적으로 재해석한 작품들을 선보이며 한국미술의 저력을 세계에 알려왔다. 홍익대학교와 동 대학원에서 한국화를 전공하였으며, 베니스비엔날레, 부산비엔날레, 상하이 Long Museum, 로스앤젤레스 Museum of Contemporary Art(MOCA), 샌프란시스코 Asian Art Museum, 일본 MORI ART Museum, 런던 Saatchi Gallery, 뉴욕 Museum of Arts and Design(MAD), 뉴욕 UN본부, 타이베이 MoCA, 북경 Today Art Museum 등 해외 유수 기관의 전시에 참여하며 활발히 활동하고 있다.
2003년 이스라엘 Jerusalem Center for Visual Arts의 레지던스에 초대된 것을 시작으로 2008년에는 제프 쿤스 등 세계적으로 유명한 현대미술 작가들과 함께 두차례에 걸쳐 iGoogle 아티스트 프로젝트에 선정되면서 일찍이 국제적 작가로서 명성을 다졌다. 2015년, 미국에서 가장 권위 있는 장학재단 중 하나인 풀브라이트 장학 프로그램(Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence)에 선정되어 미국 Concordia College에서 방문 교수를 역임하였다. 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 경기도립미술관, 제주현대미술관 등 국내 주요 미술관을 비롯하여 상하이 Long Museum, 샌프란시스코 Asian Art Museum, 베니스 Fondazione Claudio Buziol 등 해외 주요 미술기관에 작품이 소장되어 있다.
Artist Biography Kwon Ki-soo (b.1972) has introduced Korean art's strength globally through 'Dongguri'—a symbol representing people undefined by gender or age—while reinterpreting traditional Eastern philosophy in contemporary ways. He majored in Korean painting at Hongik University and its graduate school, participating in exhibitions at prestigious institutions including the Venice Biennale, Busan Biennale, Shanghai Long Museum, Los Angeles MOCA, San Francisco Asian Art Museum, Japan MORI ART Museum, London Saatchi Gallery, New York Museum of Arts and Design, UN Headquarters, Taipei MoCA, and Beijing Today Art Museum.
Beginning with the Jerusalem Center for Visual Arts residency in Israel (2003), he established international recognition by being selected twice for the iGoogle Artists Project alongside world-renowned artists like Jeff Koons (2008). In 2015, he received the prestigious Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program and served as visiting professor at Concordia College. His works are collected by major Korean art museums including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Gyeonggi Museum of Art, and Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as international institutions, including Shanghai Long Museum, San Francisco Asian Art Museum, and Venice Fondazione Claudio Buziol.
