신미경 | Meekyoung SHIN (b. 1967, South Korea)

런던과 서울을 오가며 영국박물관 등 유럽 유수의 미술관에서 전시하며 국제 무대에서 활동하는 신미경은 25년 가까운 오랜 시간 동안 조각의 재료가 아닌 ‘비누’라는 매체의 가변적인 물성과 풍화되는 유물의 형태를 대응시키면서 시간성을 가시화하여 시공간적 문화, 재료 간의 ‘번역’에서 오는 간극, 차이를 끄집어낸다. 최근 조각적 재료인 제스모나이트를 매체로 하는 작업으로 다시 한번 주목할 만한 성과를 보이고 있다. 2017년부터 세라믹과 유리 분야도 석사학위를 받으면서 동반해왔으며, 현재 네덜란드 프린세스호프국립도자박물관에서 전시가 진행되고 있는 ‘거석 시리즈’는 세라믹을 재료로 한다.

작가는 1998년부터 특정 문화를 대표하는 비너스를 비롯한 서양 고전 조각상, 불상, 도자기 등을 비누로 그야말로 정교하게(또는 불완전하게) 빚어내면서 ‘비누 작가’로 주목을 받기 시작했다. 작업은 흐르는 시간에 따라 마모되고 소멸될 위협에 있는 역사적 유물 및 예술품과 연결하여, 주위 환경에 의해 변형되고 사라지는 ‘비누’라는 매체를 선택함으로써 그 질료적 특성이 강조되었다. 모각에 따르는 재현과 원본성의 문제는 물론이고, 한갓 조각 재료의 대체제로 쓰인 일상 소모품인 비누의 물성은 견고한 권위의 조각적 형상과 충돌하면서 유물이 지닌 상징적 가치나 절대 가치, 문명에 의문을 제기한다. 응축된 시간을 중심으로 작업은 수많은 질문과 동시에 ‘조각’이란 것에 대해 다시 생각하게 한다. 2021년 발표한 <앱스트랙트 매터> 시리즈는 비누 대신 새로운 동시대의 조각적 재료인 제스모나이트로 제작된 ‘회화의 형태를 띤 납작한 조각’으로, 그것은 과거로부터 오랜 세월 축적된 흔적과 풍화자국에 주목하여, 고대 벽화나 오래된 건축물의 일부 혹은 추상 회화를 떠올리게 하는 비정형의 추상적 평면 조각들이다. 이들은 형태의 근원으로 회귀하여 조각적 물질로부터 형태가 이루어지는 사건으로, 재료 자체의 추상적 물성으로 나타난 새로운 조각적 형태이다.

Working and living between London and Seoul, Shin has been exhibiting in Europe's leading art museums, including the British Museum, and over the course of 25 years, has been visualizing temporality through the changing materiality of soap and weathering form of relics, uncovering the gaps and differences caused by translation amongst cultures and materials from various times and spaces. Her recent work involving jesmonite as a sculpture material has shown a remarkable result once again.

Since 1998, she has been known as a 'soap artist' for her meticulously yet intentionally incomplete soap sculptures, including Buddha statues, Western classical sculptures, ceramics, and objects representative of certain cultures. In addition to the challenges in the presentation and authenticity of a replica or original copy, there is a conflict between the physicality of soap, a daily consumable used as a substituting material for sculpture, and the authority of sculptural form. This raises questions about the iconic or absolute value of relics and civilization.
