독일 슈투트가르트와 베를린을 중심으로 활동하는 수자 라인하르트는 평화롭고 이상적인 풍경을 통해 자연과 인간의 관계, 그리고 우리의 시각적·감각적 인식에 대한 질문을 탐구해왔다. 그는 긍정적이고 마음을 고양시키는 이미지와 느긋함, 고요함을 선사하는 분위기에 주목하며 자신만의 독특한 회화 언어를 구축한다.

화면에는 호수와 정원, 나무와 숲, 공터 등 다양한 풍경의 요소들이 반복적으로 등장한다. 그는 풍경을 단순한 자연의 재현이 아닌 문화와 역사적 맥락 속에서 형성된 시각적 코드이자 여러 기호가 결합된 구조물로 바라본다. 이를 통해 자연을 바라보는 우리의 인식 역시 식별과 분류의 과정 속에서 구성된다는 점을 드러내며, 낭만주의적이고 기념비적인 전통적 풍경화에 대한 새로운 대안을 제시한다.

그의 풍경은 부드러운 색채와 만화적 양식, 단순화된 형태를 통해 동화적이고 평온한 분위기를 자아내지만, 동시에 지나치게 말끔하고 텅 빈 공간은 어딘가 인공적이고 초현실적인 감각을 불러일으킨다. 특정 장소를 재현하기보다 이탈리아 여행에서 얻은 기억과 상상을 응축하여, 현실과 상상 사이에 존재하는 풍경을 만들어내는 것이다. 그의 회화에 나타나는 목가적 자연은 인간이 꿈꾸는 이상적인 휴식과 치유의 공간, 나아가 아르카디아적 유토피아를 연상시킨다.

그러나 라인하르트는 화면의 요소들을 분산시키거나 고립시키고, 평평한 공간감과 대비되는 빛을 활용해 이러한 목가적 환상을 미묘하게 교란한다. 풍경은 때로 하나의 주제가 되기도 하고, 보는 이의 상상력을 위한 무대와 배경으로 물러나기도 한다. 무대디자인을 전공하고 공간 배경설치 작업을 했던 경험 역시 이러한 회화적 공간 구성과 연결된다. 이처럼 라인하르트는 풍경화의 오랜 전통을 참조하면서도 디자인과 애니메이션, 만화적 요소를 결합해 자연에 대한 새로운 시각과 독자적인 회화 언어를 구축하고 있다.

Susa Reinhardt, based in Stuttgart and Berlin, has long examined our relationship to nature and the ways we perceive it through quiet, idealized landscapes. Her paintings favor an affirmative register, creating a sense of ease and stillness through a visual language entirely her own.

Lakes, gardens, trees, forests, and clearings recur across her canvases. For Reinhardt, landscape is less a representation of nature than a visual code shaped by cultural and historical conventions. By exposing how seeing nature also involves identifying and classifying it, she proposes an alternative to the Romantic and monumental traditions of landscape painting.

Soft color, simplified forms, and a cartoon-like vocabulary lend these landscapes a storybook serenity, yet their immaculate emptiness feels subtly artificial, even surreal. Memories of Italy mingle with imagined places, leaving the scenes somewhere between the familiar and the invented. Their pastoral calm conjures nature as a place of rest and renewal, and, at its furthest reach, an Arcadian ideal.

Reinhardt unsettles this idyll by isolating and dispersing forms, using light to complicate otherwise flattened space. Landscape alternately takes center stage and recedes into a setting for the viewer’s imagination, an approach informed by her background in stage design and spatial installation. Working within the history of landscape painting while borrowing from design, animation, and comics, Reinhardt recasts nature through a pictorial language of her own.
