독일 베를린을 기반으로 서울을 오가며 활동하는 작가 유현경은 ‘그리기’, 곧 회화적 속성에 충실한 작가다. 주로 주변의 사람이나 집, 풍경 등 일상적인 소재로, 대상과의 관계 속에서 자신에게 발생하는 뚜렷하지 않은 생각이나 감정을 모아서 그림으로 풀어낸다. 이는 곧 회화적 색채의 관계, 속도감 있고 거침없는 붓질의 직관적 터치, 질료감 사이로 모호하게 약간의 단서 같은 회화적인 형상이 함께 하는 추상적 세계의 화면으로 나타난다.

살펴보면, 유현경의 작품은 재현에 주력하기보다 상황이 발생시키는 미묘한 분위기 탓인지 여백의 많고 적음에 상관없이 힘과 긴장감이 있다. 깊이 없는 공간감이 그저 암시적으로만 표현되거나 인물이 발산하는 심리적 상황으로 끌고 가는 인물화를 비롯하여, 화면에서 형태로서의 선이나 색채는 외부로 확산되고 대상은 배경의 분위기와 섞여버리고 만다. 회화적 결과물보다 작가가 형식과 내용의 시공간을 엮어가는 과정에 더 의미가 있다고 할 것이다.

유현경은 서울대학교를 졸업하면서부터 인물화를 비롯한 독창적인 표현의 회화언어를 구사함으로써 OCI미술관의 개인전을 비롯하여 일찌감치 20대부터 화단의 주목을 받았던 작가이다. 현재 베를린을 기반으로 서울을 오가며 활동하고 있으며, 자연과 좀더 가까워지면서 보다 유연하고 성숙한 작품세계를 보여준다.

Based in Berlin and Seoul, You Hyeonkyeong is deeply committed to painting, remaining true to its intrinsic qualities. Her work often draws from everyday subjects such as people, homes, and landscapes, translating the indistinct thoughts and emotions that arise from these relationships into visual form. This results in abstract compositions where hints of painterly figures emerge through the interplay of color relationships, dynamic brushstrokes, and the tactile qualities of the medium.

Through her work, You shares with viewers the unexpected emotions and curiosities that arise from life’s experiences and memories. Her paintings, which serve as fundamental expressions of herself, capture simplified ideas and intuitive observations. The presences within her canvases, existing between being and absence, appear and disappear, leaving behind traces that resonate with the viewer. It is this painterly originality that has garnered her attention.

You Hyeonkyeong’s practice, rather than focusing on mere representation, possess a tension and energy—regardless of the amount of negative space—stemming from the subtle atmospheres she portrays. Her figurative works, including portraits, suggest a shallow sense of space or pull the viewer into the psychological states of her subjects. In her compositions, lines and colors extend beyond their forms, blending with the background's ambiance. Critic Chung Youngmok observes that Yoo's paintings should be appreciated not just as final products, but for the significance of the process through which the artist intertwines form and content across time and space. He notes the "unexpected visual allure of bold, seemingly incomplete lines and colors, appearing almost awkward, yet striking a deep, primal chord within us."

Since graduating from Seoul National University, You has garnered early recognition for her distinctive pictorial language, particularly her portraits. Her solo exhibition at OCI Museum of Art, among others, established her as a significant presence in the Korean art scene from her twenties. Now based in Berlin and frequently returning to Seoul, Yoo's recent works reflect a more fluid and mature artistic vision, inspired by her closer connection with nature.
