ABOUT
한국현대미술에서 중요하게 평가되는 서용선의 예술세계는 인간들의 삶의 세계 그리기로 압축된다. 작업의 모든 시각적 형상은 기본적으로 사람에 대한 관심으로 이는 곧 인간의 삶을 조건 짓는 ‘사회’와 관계를 맺으면서 역사와 신화, 자화상, 도시 인물과 풍경 등으로 나타난다. 주로 강렬한 색채와 표현적인 터치가 있는 한편 압축적이고 간결한 구조와 질서를 보여주는 화면은 역사 속 개인의 삶, 사회 시스템 특히 서울, 뉴욕, 베를린, 멜버른 등 지구촌 대도시 상황에 처해진 현대인의 모습을 잘 보여준다. 이는 자신이 마주하는 삶의 세계에서 인간이란 무엇인가에 대한 실존적 물음이다. 현재 국립현대미술관을 비롯하여 국내외 수많은 주요 미술관들에 작품이 소장되어 있다.
‘단종’ 시리즈, ‘한국 전쟁’, <마고>신화 등을 비롯하여, 특히 도시 인물은 ‘소나무’ 연작으로 눈길을 끌던 1980년대에 첫 개인전 이후 지금까지 이어져 오고 있다. 출품작 <살아내기>, <보트>, <대화>는 작가 자신이 속해있고 목격하는 도시와 사회를 관찰한 풍경으로, 작가는 자화상을 비롯하여 어떤 특정한 인물을 의도적으로 표현하기도 하지만 이렇게 일상적인 도시의 길거리나 카페, 지하철에서 만나는 보편적인 인간들을 주요 모티프로 한다. 도시는 물론 독도, 철암프로젝트, 두만강프로젝트 등 역사적 장소와 삶에 관한 다채로운 작업들은 시간을 넘어 오늘의 우리 삶의 조건과 긴밀한 공감을 불러일으킨다. 회화와 더불어 입체 조각 및 콜라주 작업은 꾸준히 서용선 작업세계의 한 부분을 이루고 있다.
Suh Yongsun, a major figure in contemporary Korean art, is recognized for his persistent exploration of the world of human life. Every visual form in his work originates from an enduring interest in people—an inquiry that inevitably connects to the “society” that conditions human existence, and unfolds through subjects such as history and myth, self-portraits, and urban figures and landscapes. His paintings, marked by vivid color and expressive brushwork yet governed by a concise and disciplined structure, reveal the life of the individual within history and social systems, especially that of contemporaries in megacities such as Seoul, New York, Berlin, and Melbourne. Suh’s work poses an existential question about what it means to be human in the world he encounters. His works are included in the collections of major institutions, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, as well as numerous museums worldwide.
From the Danjong series and Korean War paintings to reinterpretations of the Mago myth, Suh’s depictions of urban figures—first noted in the Pine Tree series of the 1980s—have continued throughout his career since his debut solo exhibition. The works Enduring, Boat, and Conversation portray urban and social landscapes the artist inhabits and observes. While Suh sometimes renders specific individuals or self-portraits, his main subjects are the ordinary, universal figures encountered in daily life—in city streets, cafés, and subways. Beyond the urban sphere, his diverse projects, including Dokdo, the Cheoram Project, and the Tumen River Project, explore historical sites and human existence, evoking a strong sense of empathy with the conditions of contemporary life. Alongside painting, sculpture, and collage also constitute an essential and continuous part of Suh’s artistic practice.
